The talk describes the devastation smallpox had on the population of Georgian England and outlines how Daniel Sutton developed inoculation at Ingatestone. It goes on to talk about leprosy and local leper colonies such as the old hospital in Maldon, and includes the very last in the UK at Bicknacre which continued into the 21 st century. The obstetric forceps were developed by Essex men whose house is still standing at Woodham Mortimer and further by a famous Chelmsford doctor who was the first to develop laryngeal intubation.
What was “Marsh Fever”, common on the Essex Coast, and why were bladder stones common in the 17 /18 th centuries? The talk will tell you why and describes how they were removed along with lots of other interesting local medical stories.
